About This Game

Torn is a dark science-fiction mystery built for VR.

Deep in a forgotten forest, video blogger Katherine Patterson discovers an abandoned mansion, littered with strange machines and disturbing experiments. This is the home of the famed Dr. Lawrence Talbot, who went missing more than 64 years ago. This could be the story of Patterson’s career, worth millions… But when she meets Dr. Talbot in person -- still alive, trapped in another dimension, and missing his body -- Patterson realizes she was wrong. This is the story of a lifetime.

Torn opens as a narrative puzzle game as you help Talbot reactivate the mysterious machines that bring his mansion to life. Then it evolves into a dark, character-driven story as you slowly uncover the truth about Talbot, and the new dimension he calls “The Parallel.” Remember everything you see, for in Talbot’s world, truth is nothing more than the invention of the mind.

The Mansion - Teeming with the puzzles and machinations of a mad, disembodied physicist, Talbot’s mansion is a sandbox VR tourist destination built for fans of classic science fiction like The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror.

Spectacular Acts of Vandalism - Use Dr. Talbot’s gravity tool to fling pianos with the flick of a wrist. Build giant towers of objects and bring them crashing down in grand fashion.

Cinematic VR - Written by Neill Glancy (Stranglehold) and Susan O’Connor (Tomb Raider, BioShock). Original orchestral score composed by Garry Schyman (BioShock, Middle Earth: Shadow of War).

I hate to say it, but I am really disappointed in the gameplay so far. Now, granted, I am only ~90 minutes into the game, so I will update my review if I encounter something that changes my current opinion.

The graphics and physics in Torn are stunning. When I ran my hand through the curtains, I was taken aback at how fluid and natural it seemed - honestly that's my favorite part of the game.

The voiceovers are okay. The main character seems so aloof and self centered with seemingly zero excitement of the wonderous circumstance she finds herself in; it ruins any chance of immersion I might have. The wonderful, yet vastly irritating, ball of light at least shows enthusiasm, and does well at giving life to the story of Torn.

Yes, the ball of light is irritating. It might as well be Navi's drunk uncle. I absolutely _despise_ NPC voice lines that repeat ad infinitum. One of my favorite things about VR is exploring my environment, however while doing this this stupid ball of light continually pestered and pleaded with me to do what it says so the game can advance the story. Shut the hell up, and let me play the game, dang it!

As for the actual mechanics of the game, I do not understand why Torn is considered a puzzle game. Walking around the room and shining your tool light on objects to see if another light ball resides there in requires no thought at all. The mechanic was fun for the first few minutes, but after a short time it became tedious and boring. The task is made even more unfun as the music seemingly only plays at fixed points on the map, rather than continuing on a loop. Fixing the circuits by finding the corresponding shape on a piece of furniture is at first fun, but again it became extremely boring. No critical thinking is required to see that a square object goes in a square hole.

Again, I am only ~90 minutes into the game, so there may be content I have yet to discover that will challenge me. However thus far, with everything that I've seen, I don't recommend this game.. Haven't played a recent VR game. I played this on a Vive with boosted resolution for smooth graphics.
Technically I think this is a very well developed game. I think the gameplay elements involved are a good way to make this more than a walking simulator. The voice acting is good, although maybe sometimes voice lines get triggered too often or in inappropriate places. I'd rather that than never get voice lines at all.

The surprises I have found so far have been very cool. I feel like some noises (like the first elevator) are point sound sources whereas they should be spread out. Not sure if that is an engine thing.

Overall I have been delighted, good job!. This game does a good job of building a fairly convincing and fantastical mansion. It has options for teleportation, blinking forward, and smooth locomotion. Despite having rooms full of physics objects, performance stays generally solid. What it does not do a good job of is having compelling gameplay. It's fairly common for dialog audio to hitch as it plays. For me, this is very much an exercise in slogging through gameplay to get the next story bit.

I haven't gotten to the end of this thing, but so far the main gameplay mechanic is shining a flashlight around a room to find and pick up objects in order to stick them in specific places on the floors, walls, and ceiling. There's also a mechanic where one is expected to shine the flashlight over each item in an area in order to determine if they interact with it. It's not great. One can summon hints or directions for the next step at will, and one time I'm pretty sure there was no introduction to a new mechanic, and they leaned on the hint system to explain it and act as though I had seen it before. (I'm referring to gears here.). I thought this game was frustrating. It has easy puzzles that are made tedious because you have to tear up the room to find the pieces. So instead of using your brain, it's like you have to just go around looking for your lost car keys. And then when you solve the puzzle, you get to talk to some eccentric British ghost who is answered by you (a bewildered woman). Maybe the game's story gets better, but the game is lacking game play. I would rather just watch a movie. Also the puzzles involve moving furniture around to complete a circuit, but why does that make any sense?. It's an amazing game but I can't recommend it right now, and this comes down to one simple thing: Slow, annoying movement! You need to press and hold two buttons to "run" and it is still suuuuuuuper slooooooow. Come on devs! Give me a normal walking speed like in VRChat where I just have to press the touch pad, don't force me to press it again if I collide with an object in order to walk again (super frustrating, other games have auto-sprint to avoid this from happening so if you collide but change the walking direction you are walking again) and let me walk in the direction where my controller is pointing **in any given time**. The game does a weird thing by "saving" the controller position once you press it to walk and then not changing this, meaning if you turn while walking it gets messed up.

Other than that: Beautiful game, super nice atmosphere with all those moving objects, would love to buy it again and play it through, but the movement controls got too frustrating so that I had to return it for now. I don't mind the simple puzzles because I just enjoyed the really well made environment which has a very unique art style and I hope the devs will change the locomotion.. Nice puzzle/adventure game.
I especially liked the environments, concept of the puzzles and narration.

I tried smooth locomotion first, but it's not up to the standards. Though I didn't mind using dash instead, especially for this kind of game.
Objects collision box is a bit too large sometimes, and I often felt like a bull in a china shop. Once I accepted it, it was fun to make a mess.
I have mixed feelings about the ending, some elements didn't work out for me. But that's still fine.

Overall I enjoyed my time there.. +Fun
    +Somewhat Puzzle-ish
    +Walking simulator
    +Good narration

    -\/+Price for content

-Really easy on the puzzle aspect
    -Character always mad?
-Crashes frequently (at least for me whenever I walked up to a locked door)

    3\/5

This is a fun little puzzle\/walking simulator, the puzzles are interesting and fun though extremely simple and basic. The story is fun and well made, the controls are great, only problem I had were the constant crashes every time I walked towards a locked door which was irritating. Really this is a good buy if you like really simple puzzles, a decent experience, and an interesting story. However the main character is always quite rude and negative. "How can I make this situation benefit me". Which is somewhat annoying after a while.

So far so good, amazing voice acting and amazing graphics. Running maxed out graphics on my factory overclocked 1070 gaming X with 200% supersample(in-game options) with a solid 90 fps, not a single dip. I'll update after I've beaten the game, but at a first glance it's amazing.

EDIT: Will note that free walk kinda sucks and is SUPER slow with forced trackpad push on Vive. Using the dash teleport is actually pretty great, a good mix between teleport and free walk.. Tepid recommendation. The graphics and settings are very good, and the voice acting is great. The overall immersion is well done. All objects can be manipulated, a big plus for VR.

The puzzles are repetitive to the point of irritation. When you have to repeat the same very basic shape matching puzzle over and over with a voice in your ear saying "very good" everytime you match shapes like a child, it gets old fast. The pace is slow and lacks the sense of mystery that the game should evoke.

Recommend on sale because of the immersion and graphics.. I've finish the game. I would recommend this for the detailed world they created and the story. Both have kept me interested. The puzzles feel about the same all the way through, but the rooms give them variety. They get a little more complicated at the end, but not much more.

I was immediately frustrated with the motion as smooth walking is really slow. I ended up going with teleporting, which is limited to a short distance but you can spam teleports to move faster than walking.

Be careful not to run away from the floating light that tells you stuff, because it doesn't follow you and you can miss details. I also had one crash near the end of the game that broke the floating light for a bit until I had restarted the save a couple times and then the floating light started working again. I almost gave up on finishing the game.

The other thing that annoyed me initially was the object physics, although that is hard to do in VR. You can pickup almost anything and then ram it into other things and send them flying all over the place. Once you start doing puzzles this won't really matter as much, but initially it seemed like it was going to be really annoying. I think really this makes doing the puzzles a little less frustrating than they would be otherwise.
